Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Theology and Religion (University of Oxford)

Wycliffe Hall offers two full-time BA programmes: the BA in Theology and Religion and the BA in Philosophy and Theology. Both are intellectually rigorous courses that provide students with an introduction to academic Christian theology. Taking a combination of required and optional papers, students will study a broad range of topics in Christian theology and philosophy via University lectures, small tutorials with a tutor and one or two other students, and seminars. The course is assessed predominantly through exams taken at the end of the programme.

For a general overview of the course, please see the Theology and Religion webpage on the University of Oxford Admissions website.

The BA courses at Wycliffe Hall offer:

  • Student-centred learning, with an emphasis on student initiative and exploration

  • All the intellectual rigour of the University of Oxford, combined with the pastoral and ministerial insights of Wycliffe tutors

  • Sustained personal interaction with and support from tutors

  • An evangelical ethos with the opportunity to participate in formational activities and the life of the worshipping community

  • A proven track record of outstanding performance.

The BA in Theology and Religion can also form the basis for an ordination pathway within the Church of England, ideal for ordinands considering graduate study in Theology and who have a good first degree in another subject. Ordinands taking the BA skip the first year of the programme, and gain the qualification in just two years, before spending a year in ministerial and formational training (or, for some students, progressing to graduate study as part of their ordination training).
